When I break down decolonization to the unlearning of colonization then look the relationship of inclusion, I think of EDI. EDI standing for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. When one is looking to unlearn a habit, ritual and instinct that has formed overtime you realize that you need to find the source or root cause. We know from research, news, and stories why people want to decolonize or unlearn. I find this a tough perspective as for me it gets a bit muddy. I ask myself what is it that I should unlearn? and why is it important to unlearn? and finally how is that connected to inclusion or included in this process.
Through this journey of learning and understanding FNMI peoples I have understood the idea of "hidden curriculum". At first I have to admit I did not understand at first. Hidden curriculum is the unconscious, undercurrents, bias, that we unknowingly impose onto others. This idea helped me identify racism, sexism, status, religious beliefs, socio economic status, underprivilege/privilege, CRT (critical race theory), white supremacy, disabilities, sexuality and how ideas and opinions can be transferred or felt in a classroom. These are all topics and issues that make people uncomfortable. After realizing this I understood how through decolonization of our education system could help bring these to the surface.
As I see and understand decolonizing education through an Indigenous approach, perspective and pedagogy it makes sense. A few of the techniques or tools that help move towards decolonization is
1. Understanding self - Identity - Spirit
2. Reflection through sharing - talking circles
3. Relationship building - friends, family and community (TRC- Calls to Action)
4. Making connections - land, and animals (environmental stewardship)
5. Listening - story telling - elders, knowledge keepers
6. participating - language, traditions and ceremonies
7. Seeing Value - looking at strengths - leadership roles
When you live and teach in this manner it takes away the racism, sexism, status, religious beliefs, socio economic status, underprivilege/privilege, CRT (critical race theory), white supremacy, disabilities, sexuality because everyone is see as equal and when this occurs inclusion follows.
